The Will of the World is Changing

We don’t know where the collective ‘will’ is going to land, but I hope it does so in a space of equity, health and compassion for all. For many of us, including me, this time has been marked by a mix of emotions: anger, frustration, overwhelm, deep appreciation for others and nature, anxiety, worry, fear, intense love, loss, pain . . . All these feelings — and emotional ups and downs — are completely normal, especially given the circumstances in which we’re living. They’re also uncomfortable. But uncomfortable is okay. It’s a sign of our humanity. If we can muster the skills and strength to move forward through discomfort, we’ll all come out stronger.

Our humanity lives not only in our bones, flesh and blood. It lives in the air we breathe, in the soil from which we gather our food, in the water we drink and take refuge in on hot summer days. It lives in each one of us, in people we admire, in people we perceive as different from us and in people for whom we don’t care. So much about the body–mind connection is vastly more significant than the individuality we mistake as our true nature.

So, how do we move ahead amid our discomfort? We take stock of it all. We take stock of everything available to us as we listen deeply to the innate wisdom of our bodies, minds, hearts and others. We refuse to be ignorant and immerse ourselves in learning so that we can better understand. We refuse to be crippled by fear and forge ahead even though we feel vulnerable and uncertain. We ground ourselves in awareness of the present moment, make choices, take effective actions and create rhythms that keep us moving. Over, and over, and over again.

As we do so, we learn to become a part of the solution. The will of the world is changing. We can all do our part to influence it toward a direction of equity, health and compassion.
